At this year’s Hawaiʻi Island TechEd Collaboration conference, Kamehameha Schools educators and Mālama Honua crewmembers Mark Ellis and Kaimana Barcarse gave a presentation called “Technology and the Worldwide Voyage.”

In that presentation, they talked about the third waʻa for the voyage. It’s a waʻa where all are welcome to come on board and where there is unlimited capacity. That waʻa they are speaking metaphorically about is www.hokulea.com.

Through the website and related channels, everyone around the world is able to connect with the voyage as it is happening and join in on the journey. From its historic arrival in New York City earlier this week, to being able to access learning resources and curriculum inspired from the voyage, hokulea.com is your vessel to discovering why this meaningful voyage is taking place.

There is a learning center portion of the website, which is an incredible repository of information related to the voyage.

“It’s a place where educators can come together and share their curriculum,” shared Ellis.

“If you develop a curriculum about wayfinding or navigation, you can share it here. Or if you’re looking for something you can pull it down and make it your own.”

There is a search function to check for topics, filter by age or pick out specific subject areas. There’s the learning objective, standards, assessment and more.

“There are others that teachers have put out there that have lesson plans. But like anything on the web, there are some things we have a lot of it, whereas others can be kind of a light touch. But at least it’s a starting point and you can begin benchmarking that. And you can adjust it since you know your students best.”

The best part? Everything is on-demand and accessible at a click. Wherever you can access the internet, you can be transported to the current port of call. You can track, real-time, where the crew is, preview upcoming events and so much more.
