Hoʻomaikaʻi to KS Kapālama seniors Philip Amona and Evan Gates on finishing in the top 10 in their categories at the 2018 National History Day competition at the University of Maryland at College Park.

The Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities, who sponsors the Hawaiʻi contingent, announced the results via email Thursday.

Amona was the top Hawaiʻi student, placing fourth in the nation and earning the Best in State senior division award for his individual website, Kamehameha Schools: Forming a Hawaiian Language School.

Gates placed ninth in the Nation for his senior division paper/essay, The Franklin Petition: Igniting the National Slavery Debate.

Seven KSK students were able to travel as part of the Hawaiʻi contingent after qualifying as a result of their performance in the state competition.

In addition to the competition, they spent the past week exploring the many historical sites and significant places in and around the U.S. Capital city and spent time with peers from across the country at the University of Maryland.
