Mālama Ola Minute: Emergency preparedness: staying ahead of the storm

Jun. 5, 2023

Hurricane season in Hawaiʻi is June 1 through Nov. 30, and now is the time for our haumāna and their ʻohana to be well-prepared for any potential emergencies that may arise. Here is essential information, tips, and resources to help you stay prepared and resilient during this hurricane season.

Create an Emergency Plan
Develop a family emergency plan that includes communication strategies, designated meeting places, and evacuation routes. Include the office, kids’ school, and anywhere else you frequent. Ensure that every family member understands the plan and knows what to do in case of an emergency.

Assemble an Emergency Kit
Prepare a well-stocked emergency kit that includes essential supplies such as non-perishable food, water, medication, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, important documents, and any specific items needed for infants, elderly family members, or pets.

Build Your Own Go Kit
Haumāna can build their own personal Go Kit. It could be a favorite snack, toy, extra batteries, book, pillow, hat – anything that is easy to carry.

Stay Informed
Stay updated with the latest information by monitoring local news and weather reports. Familiarize yourself with the warning systems in your area and know how to respond to different types of alerts.

Recognize Warnings and Alerts
Have several ways to receive alerts. Download the FEMA app and receive real-time alerts from the National Weather Service for up to five locations nationwide. Sign up for community alerts in your area and be aware of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA), which require no sign up.

Being well-prepared will significantly contribute to the safety and resilience of your family during hurricane season.
