Lent week one: SMART goals mantra

Feb. 26, 2023

Nā kahu o Kamehameha have created a series of Hawaiian-focused devotionals for the season of Lent, to honor the deep Christian faith of KS founder Princess Bernice Pauahi Pākī Bishop. The devotionals were designed to be used by students, staffers and others to celebrate the coming of Easter. KS Hawaiʻi Kahu Kaunaloa Boshard KSK’77 and senior Sarah Schubert share their offering of praise to Ke Akua during Lent.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.- Psalm 32:8

The season of Lent is celebrated by many different Christian sects that have their ways of remembering Jesus. One idea that aligns with our SMART Goals mantra, is to pick something that is very specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. A couple of years ago, I chose rice. It was specific, a starchy staple that was ono with local foods. It was measurable, from two scoops to zero scoops. It was 100% achievable! Well, for the first two weeks. Was it realistic? Nope, because cauliflower rice is not the same thing. However, it was timely and I mustered enough self-control to carry it out to the end.

What if fasting from food is not your thing? Well, you can fast from having seconds. What about giving up a few luxuries, like watching TV in the evenings, or specific kinds of shows? What about taking a break from social media? Also, do we have to give up something? What if we chose to do something good, and encouraged others? What if you volunteered at your local church’s feeding program or food pantry? Just remember, preparing for EASTER is not just a 40-day fast, but an everyday offering of praise to the King of kings.

When I was 5 years old, my parents who observed Lent told me that it was time to eat Tofu. That was all I knew about the Lenten season until I got old enough to understand abstaining from things that you would normally rely on. As I got to age 8, I understood a bit more and fasted from movies. That was hard, especially for my parents who needed to entertain me. Now, as a 17-year-old, I decided to join my church family in partaking in the Daniel Fast as a sign of unity and identifying with my Savior, Jesus.
