Congratulations to Kamehemeha Schools Maui eighth grade student Kawai Kapuni, who was selected to participate in Stanford Universityʻs Pre-Collegiate Studies summer 2017 program! She successfully competed against students in grades 8-12 (ages fourteen through seventeen) and will earn the opportunity to get a taste for what living and learning at Stanford University is like. During the application process, Kawai submitted her middle school transcripts, standardized test scores and a writing sample for each of the classes that she applied for. The work samples included an argumentative essay on the recent ban on immigrants to the United States, a fictional story on the afterlife, and a series of mathematical problems.

She was selected to participate in the Expository Writing course which runs from June 25 through July 14. A unique feature of this program is that the courses revolve around field trips and hands-on activities related to the course content.  Kawaiʻs goal is to become a lawyer and this is one step in her journey to become one.  We are very proud of her efforts and achievement!
