Members from the KS ET Education Technology Services team recently attended the SXSW EDU 2023 conference in Austin, Texas where they had the opportunity to explore the latest trends and innovations in education. The conference, which took place from March 6-9, brought together educators, industry leaders, and policymakers from around the world to share ideas, insights, and best practices for improving education.
The ETS team, consisting of Clinton Iwami, Micah Mizumoto KSK’10, and Wendy Oliver, attended various sessions and workshops, including leadership panel discussions on the future of education technology and policy, utilizing design and multimedia-based learning in education, and musical performances focused on creative ways of learning.
One of the highlights of the conference was "Teaching & Learning in the Age of AI: What’s Next?" which focused on the potential impact of AI in education and its emerging ethical concerns. The eye-opening session covered AI platforms that can change our ways of integrating technology into our work and practice. The team is excited to learn more about AI and explore ways it can be leveraged as a tool to improve learning and teaching processes, and have already begun experimenting with AI to help spark ideas for future projects.
Also in attendance was Evan Beachy, a senior education consultant with KS’ Strategy and Transformation Group, who said, “There is truly something for everyone and the conference organizers do an excellent job of securing major players for panels.” The ETS team and Beachy were thrilled to meet up together at the conference and connect with other professionals in their field. Beachy continued, “When you get the opportunity to go to an event like this as a group, the chances to learn and build rapport are magnified a thousand-fold."
The team came away with a wealth of knowledge and new ideas to incorporate into their instructional technology services that extend across all three campuses, Nā Kula Kamaliʻi, and other KS-supported programs.
"Ongoing professional development is essential to the long-term success of our education technology services team as it enables our team members to remain current with new and emerging technologies, best practices, and pedagogical approaches," said Darrin Sato, Director of ET Education Technology Services. "This ensures the team can provide high-quality support, innovate, and meet the evolving needs of our kumu and haumāna at Nā Kula."
The team is excited to share their insights and experiences with colleagues and to continue exploring new ways to harness the power of technology for the benefit of our staff, kumu, and haumāna.
