Papa ʻEkahi (1st Grade) is learning about various kuleana in each region of an ahupuaʻa.  To learn more about empathy, they have assumed a kuleana in a region of their choice.  After researching their kuleana and region, they are paired up with another haumāna of a different region and kuleana.  In the Makerspace, they will design and create a makana (gift) for their partner to demonstrate the sharing that occurred between the uka(mountain) and kai (ocean) regions in old Hawai’i.

Papa ‘Elima applies their research skills to explore what it takes to build a traditional Hawaiian hale (house/structure).  Collaborating in groups, haumana discover materials that were used, types and purposes of various hale, lashing and thatching techniques, kapu and traditions affiliated with hale, and even modern day hale restoration.  After presenting their findings to classmates, they will begin to build a model of a hale, using resources available at their homes and on campus.
