Last summer, Alaukawai 18, our Mathematics Task Force, convened to begin work on personalized Hawaiian Culture-Based Education (HCBE) competency-based learning through the design of the K-12 competencies. The goal is to build student understanding of the competencies by designing learning experiences. In November, we had our first Hale Kumu as a mathematics kauhale focused on using observational data to determine opportunities of growth as a K-12 program. Through our collective inquiry, we identified agency and relevancy as key areas of opportunities to strengthen pedagogical practices for our mathematics competency work.
Our kumu and alakaʻi continuously look for opportunities on how we, as a kula, can best support learning for our haumāna. Through this important work, they are creating conditions in which haumāna can thrive.
Mahalo nui loa to all of our educators who work tirelessly to put keiki at the center and develop teaching strategies to help them grow as learners, not just now, but well into their lives as future leaders in our communities across our honua.
