Poʻo Kumu Kaleo Pahukula, Hope Poʻo Kumu Effie Niederbrach, and our Curriculum Coordinator, Kumu Cyndi Fernandez were amongst the campus leaders who shadowed students from kindergarten to high school to see school through their eyes. Mr. Pahukula shadowed Radyn, Kumu Effie was paired with Chelsea, and Kumu Fernandez partnered with Roah. There was an agreement that at the end of the day, which included two recesses, that the students are busy and all three adults were tired. “There is a high cognitive demand that Radyn and his fellow classmates exprience each day in their learning, and I thank his kumu for setting high expectations and finding fun and engaging ways to present the material,” noted Mr. Pahukula. “Radyn and I, and the other students collaborated quite a bit throughout the day,” as was the case in the other two grade levels. Kumu Fernandez noted the increased amount of Hawaiian vocabulary used by kumu in conversation and in their lessons throughout the day, which has been a goal for our organization through our staff ʻŌlelo Kahua classes. Kumu Effie shared, “One of the things that I learned from Chelsie, is the importance of play – that you can get to know someone pretty quickly through play and that there is sheer joy in play.” Roah asked Kumu Fernandez, “Can you shadow me more often?” What great idea but the adults might need a bus ride home to take a nap. Mahalo to all the kumu and haumāna who welcomed our leaders into their classrooms throughout our campus.
