Saturday, April 26, was an incredible day both on and off the field for the Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i ‘ohana as they captured Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) championships in girls' water polo, softball and boys' volleyball.
“We are thrilled with the performance of our softball, water polo and boys volleyball teams last weekend," said Athletic Director Kimo Weaver. "Their success is owed, to a great extent, to our students’ tireless work ethic and guidance from our coaches. It’s truly a rewarding feeling to see our teams come together, compete and reap positive results.”
The Warrior softball team scored a big 21-10 victory against Konawaena on Saturday to win the league title for the third straight year and a top four seed in the state tournament. The tournament will start on May 6 at the UH Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The girls water polo team defeated Kealakehe 15-4 on Saturday to claim the BIIF championship. The team was featured in West Hawaii Today for their balanced attack and dominating performance. Unfortunately they suffered a 16-13 loss to Mililani in the HHSAA state tournament quarterfinals on Thursday. The team will continue to compete in the consolation bracket for the tournament, which is being hosted at Nae‘ole pool on the KS Hawai‘i campus. See the brackets for the state tournament.
The nationally ranked boys' volleyball team swept Waiakea in three sets to earn the BIIF Division I overall championship 25-15, 25-16 and 27-25. Read a recap courtesy of BigIslandNow.com. The volleyball team will host either Kahuku or sister school KS Kapālama in a quarterfinal match in the state tournament on Saturday. See the brackets for the tournament.
Meanwhile, in Honolulu, the academic decathlon team learned of their results from the prior two-days of competition in the national competition of the United States Academic Decathlon. In addition to several individual medals won, the team had earned a second place finish in their division.
The good fortune hasn’t stopped so far. In addition to these awards already achieved, the baseball team earned a spot in the BIIF championship game against HPA on May 6.
“We wish them good luck next week at the HHSAA tournament along with our tennis and golf teams currently competing at the HHSAA tournament," Weaver said. "Our judo team will be at HHSAA next weekend. Baseball and track teams will be competing at our league championships this weekend. We wish them all good luck and to remember to have fun! When their having fun, good things will happen.”
