Get your bon dance on this weekend! Honolulu’s largest bon dance is happening at the Mō‘ili‘ili Summer Fest, on Saturday, July 2, from 5:00 to 10:30 p.m. at the old Varsity Theatre parking lot. The annual festival will also feature taiko drum demonstrations, ʻono local food, retail pop-ups, cultural entertainment and activities for the keiki.
Kamehameha Schools has partnered with the Mō‘ili‘ili Hongwanji Mission, Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiʻi, Mō‘ili‘ili Community Center, the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Mō‘ili‘ili businesses and community groups to host the free event aimed at showcasing the neighborhood's history, culture, and vibrancy.
Mō‘ili‘ili is among the major urban redevelopment areas in KS’ commercial properties portfolio. The Summer Fest site sits on Kamehameha Schools land.

“This well-attended and highly anticipated annual event is fully funded by donations and sponsorships and brings together communities to enjoy an evening filled with culture, history, food and entertainment. KS is excited to increase its educational footprint with the Hālau Pā: A Native Hawaiian Collaboratory (collaboration + laboratory), located in the heart of Mōʻiliʻili aimed to engage learners in Native Hawaiian leadership development, social entrepreneurship and innovation.”
Also featured under the KS tent is Otsuji Farm. Get ready to taste fresh produce from KS’ agricultural lands, and enjoy ʻono food from Otsuji Farm including sushi sliders and Hamakua mushroom fries!
Additionally, over 30 popular food trucks and mobile food vendors from Street Grindz will be serving up ʻono food. Click here for a full list of food and retail vendors. The taiko drum performance by the Pacific Buddhist Academy starts at 5:30 p.m.
