A group of KS Kapālama students and staff received a belated Christmas present as they were recognized for their engineering skills and creativity in a holiday-themed gingerbread house building contest that included entrants from across the country.
The contest has been run over the past two decades, and featured submissions from 230 schools within the nationwide Flik Independent School Dining network.
Flik, which oversees the teams that provide nutritious food for haumāna at KS Kapālama, hosts the Gingerbread House Building Contest annually. Chef Nixon Dadalos, a resident baker on the KSK Flik team, brought home second-place honors in the “Individual” category, while the KSK “Robo Warriors” robotics team led by Christa Collins utilized its engineering skills and claimed second place in the “Student-Assisted” category.
Contest organizers noted that the “Amazing creations made this year’s judging the most difficult to date.”
