“A ʻo ke Akua me kākou, ʻo wai lā ke kūʻē mai iā kākou?
If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Romans 8:31 is the guiding scripture behind this year’s spiritual focus for Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha: Ua Mau Loa Ke Aloha Awaiāulu o Ke Akua — The Binding Love of God is Eternal.
Each year, Kamehameha Schools’ faith leaders prayerfully discern a spiritual theme to guide staff, haumāna and the broader KS ʻohana. In his letter to the early Christian church in Rome, the apostle Paul reminds believers that neither hardship nor fear, neither the present nor the future, can separate them from God’s unconditional love through Christ.
For Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi Kahu Kaunaloa Boshard KSK’77, the guiding scripture is a reminder that our confidence is found not in ourselves but in God.
“We will always have challenges that either we can predict or that come at us like earthquakes that shake and shock us into sudden awareness of our vulnerability,” Boshard said. “This powerful scripture of truth and love teaches us to simply trust in God who always promotes, protects and provides for our wellness and restoration.”
For Hauʻoli Akaka, a cultural consultant at KS, the ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi phrase “mau loa” carries a meaning that reaches beyond “forever.”
“When we declare ‘mau loa’ whether in scripture, pule, mele or inoa, we declare that ke Akua’s goodness and aloha shall have no finite time, limitation or expiration,” Akaka said.
He likened that enduring love to Princess Pauahi’s lasting aloha and kuleana to uplift the lāhui, a legacy that continues across generations.
“I envision a day when kumu, mākua, haumāna, hoa hana and kaiāulu are unified and reciprocate ke aloha awaiāulu — a love that firmly fastens and binds us to Him, and thus, to one another,” Akaka said.
Throughout the school year, the 2026–27 spiritual theme will be woven into Christian curriculum, devotionals, campus gatherings and stories shared through the Our Faith website, inviting all our Kamehameha ʻohana to reflect on the enduring promise of God’s love today and forever.
