The 91st Annual Ho‘olaule‘a at Kamehameha Schools Kapālama is a family-friendly, cultural celebration slated for Saturday, Feb. 27, from 8:30-4:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public with parking on campus as directed by security, at Kapālama Elementary School and at the Kamehameha Schools bus terminal. Bus shuttles begin at 7:00 a.m.
This year, the class of 2018 celebrates the continued rejuvenation of the Hawaiian culture. The theme, “E Ola Mau Ka Na‘auao” means “Let Wisdom and Enlightenment Live Forever.”
Festivities kick off on the Koni Field of the Kapälama campus with KS’ own Warrior Marching Band and Color Guard, Hawaiian Ensemble, Kamehameha Middle School’s Papa Oli me Hula, The Elementary School Children’s Chorus, Concert Glee, and the Kamehameha Dance Company.
World-class performances by Kuana Torres Kahele, Kekuhi Kanahele, Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole, Karen Keawehawai‘i, Ku‘uipo Kumukahi, Darlene Ahuna, Mihana Souza, Chad Takatsugi and Na Wai round out the day.
Expect all the ‘ono food you love including Kamehameha’s famous brownies, malasadas, Hawaiian plates, Korean plates and specialties at the Sweet Shoppe.
Activities include inflatables, rides, video games, a dunking booth and lots of games and crafts for the keiki. Community vendors will be on-hand to provide information on keiki services, financial aid and scholarship services and will include a demonstration on how to ku‘i ‘ai.
Come early for the country store, silent auction, plant shop, lei and event apparel. Neighbor island delicacies include Moloka‘i fish, Kaua‘i kūlolo and Kona coffee and tea.
Ho‘olaule‘a is a parent-led event coordinated by Parents and Alumni Relations, an organization dedicated to connect, involve, and serve parents and alumni of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama. The first Ho‘olaule‘a was held on May 16, 1925.
Event proceeds provide students with grants for enrichment opportunities, special events, competition and educational travel.
