HŌʻIKE 2023 - PAIʻEA

Mar. 9, 2023

PAIʻEA is the first in a trilogy of rock opera performances being developed at Kamehameha Hawaiʻi campus, focusing on Kamehameha I.

Written almost entirely in Hawaiian language, PAIʻEA is a glam rock opera that covers the early life, tests, and battles of Kamehameha including his birth, the lifting of pōhaku Naha, and the Battle of Mokuʻōhai. Act I was presented as a workshop performance for Hōʻike 2022. This year it makes an evolution to a fully staged production, returning the tradition of having the entire high school involved in the production either on-stage, in the band, behind-the-scenes crew, or in the choir. Senior Kamauokealoha Beaudet takes over the role of Kamehameha in this year's production.

Hōʻike 2023: PAIʻEA will take place on Thursday, March 9 and Friday, March 10 at 6 p.m. in the Koaiʻa Gymnasium.

Tickets are $5 for general admission, or $10 for VIP early entry seating, and will be on sale starting February 20. Purchase tickets online now through 3/5 using our FACTS purchase portal.

Performances will not be livestreamed, but will be recorded and posted at a later time. See PAIʻEA in person to see it first.

This summer, PAIʻEA will be adapted to a travelling production and be brought to Scotland for the American High School Theatre Festival at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Funds raised from the ticket sales will help to defray cost of that travel for the haumāna participating in that trip.
