KS Kapālama Summer School

KS Kapālama is jumping with activity this summer as regular KS students and students from other schools take classes to enrich their minds. Classes range from Hawaiian culture to robotics so there is something to interest every student. KS Photographer Michael Young recently roamed the campus to capture the highlights of summer school.

Music teacher Gayla Traylor has a huge following for her Zumba dance activity during recess.




Kids of all ages follow along and get a great workout.




Keiki pay close attention to their kumu as they await instructions at the beginning of class.




How do keiki get excited about their Hawaiian heritage? A four-hour program introduces third and fourth grade keiki to Hawaiian chant and dance, conversation, arts and crafts and stories.




Some keiki find books to read in the school library.




Keiki are introduced to some basic hula steps for the first time.




Keiki learn how to use technology to enhance their learning.




Middle school students learn how to cook in the innovative class called "The Restaurant."




Middle school students work to improve their math skills.




Students develop their singing and ‘ukulele skills in the Kanikapila class.




Middle school dance students learn how to use higher order thinking to describe, analyze, interpret and reflect on their own performances and respond to the performances of others.




Advance Robotics students learn how to apply concepts of mechanics, electricity, mathematics, logic and computer programming to solve engineering problems
