KS Kapālama Summer School

June 25, 2015

The Kamehameha Schools Kapālama summer school program has something for everyone, whether it’s academic, cultural or recreational. The program welcomes students from elementary through high school from across the island.

Haumāna (students) can take classes for a half day or even a full day if they want to participate in the program’s Performing Arts Academy or Sports Academy in the afternoon.

Approximately 2,800 students take part in over 200 course offerings. KS photographer Michael Young captured a sampling of what’s happening at the Kapālama campus through July 17.

Elementary school students explore technology while enjoying the outdoors. Some of the skills that they are introduced to include word processing, digital animation, digital presentations, basic computer programming and internet proficiency.

These students develop basic math skills through hands-on activities that explore concepts like counting, numbers, shapes and patterns.

Middle school students in the robotics class learn about the engineering process by solving a problem through research and investigation.

Middle school art students begin a self-portrait drawing while incorporating basic art concepts.

Students in the Performing Arts Academy Beginning Hawaiian Ensemble class learn chord progressions and strumming techniques on the guitar, bass and ‘ukulele.

Band students develop their musical knowledge and skill.

Hula students learn the basic steps and terms that are incorporated into hula styling.

Sports Academy students choose a concentration (volleyball, basketball, or soccer) but have weekly opportunities to explore other sports. These students are learning soccer skills through fun exercises.
