KS Kapālama students and staffers celebrate Halloween

November 2, 2015

Students and staff showed off their creativity this past Halloween as high school students carved up pumpkins in competition, kindergarteners learned how to make jack-o-lanterns and everyone dressed up as their favorite characters for a fun day in school.

KS photographer Michael Young was on hand to capture the Halloween happenings.

Windward Mall hosted the 6th annual Pumpkin Carving Festival Family and Youth Day on October 24. School teams were given two hours to carve five pumpkins that represented the theme, Hawaii Sports Legends. The Kapālama Campus entered a high school team made up of students from the Robotics class/club and CAD students.

This is the third year that the high school has participated in the competition. Students look forward to the contest every year.

The KS team won 5th place out of 13 schools earning the People’s Choice award and an Ice cream party sponsored by Meadow Gold Dairies.

This year’s theme was Hawaii Sports Legends and the team anticipated that most schools would chose s Eddie or Duke theme, so the team went sumo. The students divided their efforts and made a carving of Akebono and Musashimaru that they placed on a robot base and drove them around in a mock sumo match.

Kindergarten students got an assist in making Jack-0-Lanterns from volunteer parents.

The emphasis was on having fun so perfect pumpkin carving wasn’t the priority.

A couple of 5th grade classes got together for a Halloween costume parade display.

Each student got a chance to strut his stuff like this mad scientist!

Teacher Cady Uyeoka, dressed as Master Yoda from Star Wars, snapped pictures of each student.

Counselor Ryder Maeda passed out Halloween treats to trick or treaters.
