Around KS - From Keiki Acting to Laulau Wrapping

April 28, 2017

Kamehameha Schools has been abuzz with student and staff activities recently. KS Photographer Michael Young captured the action at KS Kapālama High School, KSK Elementary School, the campus' Ka‘iwakīloumoku Hawaiian Cultural Center, and He‘eia Preschool on O‘ahu's Windward coast.

Staff members from KS' Kawaiaha‘o Plaza headquarters went on a huaka‘i to KS Kapālama to see the annual 5th grade play at Ke‘elikōlani Auditorium. The play was the culmination of student research, writing, music composition, art creation and performance.

Staff members check in for the play which followed the journey of the Hōkūle‘a Polynesian Voyaging canoe as it sailed to South America, the Caribbean and the U.S. continent to meet and learn from other indigenous people about how to mālama the Earth.

The cast gets high fives from students and staff after the performance.

KS staff members also recently participated in an enrichment activity at Ka‘iwakīloumoku Hawaiian Cultural Center, learning how to make vegetarian laulau. Here they move down the table and assemble the ingredients which include mushrooms, sweet potatoes and breadfruit.

KS Cultural Consultant Manu Boyd stands by to offer help as the staff wrap their laulau ingredients in ti leaves.

There is a lush dry land lo‘i at the high school campus next to the Keoua classroom building.

The students in a nearby Hawaiian language and culture classes harvest the mature kalo.

Meanwhile, in Windward O‘ahu, keiki at the KS He‘eia Preschool circle around the parking lot and practice their bicycling skills.

A couple of other keiki have fun playing with water.

In the classroom, students brush up on their reading skills.
