The Back-to-School Reset
Summer flew by in the blink of an eye! Easing children into a new school year can be challenging. Here are some tips on how to support your child’s transition back to school:
Acknowledge the best parts of summer
Sit down with your keiki and review the summer. Talk about their favorite parts of summer then make a list of things they wish they had accomplished. Make plans to do these things during upcoming school breaks.
Be real about the importance of school
Adjusting back to rigorous schedules and bedtimes can be difficult for kids. Reinforce the importance of school and set clear expectations for the school year.
It’s completely normal for kids to be anxious about a new school year. Ask your child what they are most looking forward to, and what they are most worried about. Validate their feelings, and give them a list of supportive adults who they can contact for help.
Encourage socialization and participation
Encourage your child to try something new this year like joining a club, team or committee. Ensuring that haumāna feel connected to school activities – outside of academics – is critical for student engagement.
Reset expectations and emphasize family values
Emphasize the importance of sleep, exercise, outdoor activities, community service, and spending time with friends and family. For older students, it is important to maintain clear and consistent rules including curfew and safe driving expectations.
Put it on the calendar
Improve family accountability by adding events and activities to a family calendar. Place this in a common area as a reminder to your child that working together as an ‘ohana is important. Plan a check-in date, approximately a month from now, to track the progress of the back-to-school transition.
