November 6, 2020
To our KS Kapālama staff ‘ohana, please see the below message that will be sent to all K-12 families regarding second-semester plans.
Aloha e ka ‘ohana Kamehameha Kapālama,
You can feel the excitement mounting as, week after week, more haumāna are returning to campus. With them they bring an energy that has been sorely missed here at Kapālama, and it forecasts brighter times as we continue our commitment to providing a world-class education while maintaining the safety and well-being of our entire campus community.
With excitement and enthusiasm, we are pleased to announce plans to prepare for second semester. If external and internal COVID-19 risk factors are at acceptable levels, we should expect to remain in our Hybrid Learning Model that includes both distance learning and regular face-to-face learning.
For KS Kapālama, families will be asked to select between two options for the second semester.
Option 1: HYBRID LEARNING
Includes elements of both distance learning and face-to-face learning.
Option 2: FULL DISTANCE LEARNING Delivers all instruction via KS Digital.
To assist our families in making an informed decision, your po‘o kumu office will be offering informational sessions over the next week. We strongly encourage you to make time to attend the session and learn more about each option before you make your selection.
SELECTION WINDOW: NOV. 13 - 20
The window to make your selection through KS Connect will be Nov. 13 - 20. Starting Nov. 13, you will find the "Learner Model Selection" feature on the KS Connect homepage where you will be prompted to submit your selection. Middle and high school boarding selections will be designed to reflect choices unique to the Residential Life department.
After that window closes, we are asking everyone to commit to their selection as we will proceed to make the necessary academic preparations with the information provided. For day students, please note, if you do not make your selection in KS Connect, we will assume you will be joining us in our Hybrid Learning option.
Just as we were prepared to do in the fall, if conditions change for the worse, we will be ready to move to full-distance learning for all K-12 students who select Hybrid Learning. This is a scenario we hope to avoid, but we can find comfort in knowing we will be prepared nonetheless.
NEW VOLUNTARY TESTING
We are always seeking ways to provide additional precautions and assurance for our school community as we return to campus. One such opportunity is testing. We will be exploring regularly scheduled COVID-19 testing for our campus ‘ohana which should provide us with more information to manage potential spread.
Additional information on these initiatives will follow in the coming weeks but will include:
Please be on the lookout for more information on these additional safety precautions in the coming weeks.
Whether you choose Hybrid or full distance learning, please know that we are committed to supporting our haumāna whatever the circumstances may be. Mahalo for your time, attention, partnership, and most of all, aloha.
Mālama pono and please expect to hear from your po‘o kumu soon.
Ke aloha nui,
Dr. Taran Chun, Po‘o Kula
