Under the guidance of Music Kumu Clarke Tuitele and Hawaiian Kumu ‘Alohi De Lima, students honed their sound and perfected their ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi in preparation for the competition, which is held annually at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Hoʻomaikaʻi goes out to song leader, Judiah for his lively song leadership, and to Kūlia and Kamauoha for introducing their class. Mahalo to Jon Kimoto, Grades K-2 counselor, and Lemoe Tua, PE teacher, for giving of their time to learn the music and accompany our haumāna. KS Maui showed well earning trophies in other divisions. Papa ʻElua took 2nd place in the Grade 2/3 Division, while Kula Waena and Kula Kiʻekiʻe won their respective divisions. Both elementary groups and their kumu were given a hero’s welcome back to campus by their Kula Haʻahaʻa brothers and sisters.

Papa ʻElima Carries Nā Mele Melodies to Christmas Concert

As has become a tradition on our campus, Papa ʻElima joined our high school performing arts classes and the middle school choir at the annual school Christmas Concert. They performed their two Nā Mele songs with a group of the kaikamahine adding a hula to their competition song. The finale pulled all singers from K-12 into a combined choir to sing two Christmas carols, O Holy Night and Silent Night, that put the Christmas spirit into the hearts of all who attended. Mahalo to Kumu Hulali DeLima for teaching our young ladies their hula and our musicians for accompanying the haumāna once more.

Papa ʻElua Earns Nā Mele Recognition

Singing for the first time on the stage at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, our Papa ʻElua stepped up to give an amazing performance and earned 2nd place in their division. Their competition song, which all schools in their division sang, was Ka Naʻi Aupuni and their choice song was a beautiful rendition of He Mele no Kaʻiulani. A special shout out to Brodie for leading and Mandie, Luana, and Akeakamai for introducing their class. Mahalo to nā Kumu ʻAlohi De Lima for preparing our haumnāna and to our in-house musicians for their support.
