As our lāhui joins together high above Keaʻau, to protect our ancestral space, our kula joins together miles below, continuing to evolve and protect kanaka spaces key to growing the next generation of ʻōiwi Hawaiʻi leaders. Spaces where students are seen not only for who they are, but what they might become.
As we welcome our keiki back for their new school year, our kuleana is to provide support to ensure belonging and connectedness for haumāna to thrive at Kamehameha. Our responsibility is to facilitate the growth and development of our students in ways that contribute to a strong sense of identity.
With much care, we, Kamehameha Hawaiʻi, are committed to the cultural, physical, intellectual, and spiritual well-being of our haumāna. We’ve recognized again and again the importance of identity in ensuring secure, successful futures as kanaka ʻōiwi. Knowing who you are and where you come from helps us all to confidently navigate new journeys.
Our kula continues to affirm a supportive and caring environment for all students. As a result, we are in the process of making revisions to our policies and practices that are gender inclusive - honoring all expressions of gender identity. This assures all students a safe and healthy educational environment.
In the next few months, you and your child will be learning more about gender inclusion and we ask for your open participation. If you have any questions or concerns, please know that your division poʻo kumu are available to talk with you and your ʻohana.

GENDER IDENTITY DEFINED
“A personʻs innermost core concept of self which can include boy/man, girl/woman, a blend of both, neither, and many more. Gender identity is how each person perceives themself and what they call themselves. One’s gender identity can be consistent with, or different than, their sex assigned at birth. The language a person uses to communicate their gender identity can evolve and shift over time, especially as someone gets older and has access to a broader gender vocabulary.”
