He manaʻo o ke kahu
KS Maui Kahu Kalani Wong KSK’74

My wife and I love noodles. The type of noodle we like has a bit of chew to it. Our usual go to is either Sun Noodles or Iwamoto Noodles. But what would happen if we could make our own? So, I set out to see if I could, and I must say, it turned out pretty good. What surprised me was how easy it is to make noodles. The key is making sure all the ingredients are in a proper ratio, everything is balanced. If one ingredient is out of proportion, the quality we are looking for is lost.

Life is to be lived in balance. If one thing overrides another, we get stressed and will not be able to function properly. If everything is balanced, we can operate at an optimum. So how does one find that balance? Know that it is not always possible, that there are times that you are going to be overloaded. Accept that, and the first opportunity you have, take time to put things back in alignment. In Genesis, we read how ke Akua worked for six days and rested on the seventh. Take a Sabbath when you can.

If you are a type A personality like I am, you may feel like you need to be always doing something. In that case, take time to refocus your energy. Small simple breaks allow you to cut some of the stress and anxiety. Try journaling, drawing, cooking, maybe make your own noodles. Do something that uses the other side of your brain. Find comfort in doing something different.

Find like-minded people. Know that there may be people in your life who are dragging you down, who may be throwing off your balance. Seek folks who will bolster you up, rather than pulling you down. Being away from these people will bring you back to a better place. Jesus went up to the mountains to get away from those who wanted more from Him. It was there that He found His balance.

This year challenged us and we are ready to get back to “normal” as things open up. Take time now to set up a plan which will keep you from being overwhelmed. Find a better you by taking time to bring balance to your life. If Jesus did it, so can you.
