Kamehameha Schools has created a series of Hawaiian-focused devotionals for Advent, to honor the deep Christian faith of our founder Princess Pauahi. The devotionals were designed to be used by staffers, students and others to celebrate the coming of Christmas, so please feel free to share them.

Ka Manaʻo o ke Kahu

Waiting is one of the most challenging things anyone, especially keiki, can be expected to do. But what can you do, except to sit and wait in hope? For our ‘ohana, we eagerly await the arrival of our newest moʻopuna, who is due December third. This joy has been building since we learned of the pregnancy earlier this year. We watch with joy as the kaikuaʻana of this coming child, prepares for the arrival of a sibling. She has become very motherly with her dolls by singing to them while feeding them or putting them to bed.
The hope for this coming child is being felt by nā tūtū, nā mākua a me ke kaikuaʻana. Yet, this manaʻolana pales in comparison to what a whole nation was feeling as it awaited the birth of ka Mekia, the Messiah, who would be called ʻo Kupaianaha, ʻo Kākāʻōlelo, ʻo Keakuamana, ʻO Kamakuamauloa, ʻo Kealiʻiokamalu – Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Join us during ka Hikina, Advent, to celebrate the coming of Iesū Kristo, whose government will have no end. To set our minds in the right place, let us take time to pause each week to see the manaʻolana, the hope of the Christ Child.

To me, Isaiah 9:2,6-7 is about the hope given to the people of the world. This section of Scripture is a prophecy that was given through the prophet Isaiah and it foretells a time when the Savior of the world will be born. It reveals all the Names that the Messiah will fulfill, and it describes the Reign of His kingdom and what He must do to establish it. These verses give us hope that this child will be our savior. He will be the one to save humanity from the darkness and give us hope for our future.
