The deadline for applications to Hālau ʻo Kapikohānaiāmālama, Kamehameha Schools Maui’s summer program, is fast approaching.
And haumāna can look forward to dozens of culturally rich experiences from Lifeguarding to Papa Ho‘okele Wa‘a, or wayfinding via our double-hull canoe over the four-week term running from June 14 to July 9.
“This is truly a Hawaiian culture-based learning laboratory helping to build the next aloha ‘āina leaders,” says Jay-R Kaawa Ke Po‘o o Hālau ʻo Kapikohānaiāmālama.
Kumu Ekela Kaniaupio-Crozier says the interdisciplinary courses are based in ʻike kūpuna Hawaiʻi — moʻolelo, mele, chants and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.
“Whatever haumāna are looking at, whether it’s the bugs, the birds, the ocean, it is through the lenses of our connection to the past and how that leads us to the future,” Kaniaupio-Crozier says.
Success in academic areas such as Language Arts, Math, and Science is an expected outcome when the educational foundation is culturally rich, she says.
Helping to create a unique learning space are kumu from kula Kaiapuni o Maui who will be joining the faculty of Hālau ʻo Kapikohānaiāmālama. Collectively, expertise in Hawaiian culture-based education, including ‘ike Hawai‘i and ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i will be shared and used as the medium of learning.
