He manaʻo o ke kahu
A life without having to make decisions would be so much easier, but it’s a totally absurd thought! Our lives are filled with decisions and we need to learn how deftly navigate through our choices so we can flourish.
Like what I am going to wear for work this morning? Decisions, decisions! Each morning as I examine my school garb hanging in my closet, I tend to grab the most comfortable Kamehameha Schools collared polo shirt. (Like my favorite ʻŌiwi Edge black polo shirt, it makes me look slimmer!)
Once that choice is made then it’s time to enjoy my morning devotions with my family, next make a smoothie, and run out the door, dressed for success. These actions prepare me to meet the day and walk out of our house with Jesus in my heart fully known, fully loved, and fully clothed.
Today’s scripture is a powerful instruction on what we should all be wearing each day, it says, “…and regardless of what else you put on, wear love.” Ke aloha is the holy wardrobe that dresses us for fruitful relationship-building. Clothing ourselves with the attire of affection helps us to greet the day with an uncompromising attitude of gratitude.
What other kūpono apparel of faith should we adorn? The Apostle Paul teaches us in verse 12, to put on the following: 1) the heart of compassion, 2) kindness, 3) humility, 4) gentleness, and 5) patience. He declares, “These are great accessories, but if there is one thing that you must wear, it is love!
Why? It is the foundation of all spiritual clothing that makes our style and swagger all work together in Christ. It is the one thing we can never forget to put on because love embraces harmony, it promotes unity and makes our entire fashion ensemble of faith complete!
As we venture into our first quarter of distance learning with our haumāna throughout Nā Kula ʻo Kamehameha (tri-campus), let us always remember to dress to bless. Let’s clothe ourselves with Christ’s apparel that is, kūpono (proper), haʻahaʻa (humble), akahai (gentle) a me ahonui (patient).
Just remember, love is not a feeling, it is an action. And putting on aloha is like putting on your own clothes each day!
