Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely, I will help you, surely, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

Mai Makaʻu – by Kahu Kalani Wong

Fear is something we all face. Sometimes the source of the fear is known and other times unknown. The bully in school or the menace down the street, these you can see, and wisdom tells you to avoid. The Hebrew people were living in fear from a known enemy. Forces had come into their Promised Land and chased them out. Some were captured, others escaped to neighboring countries. So, they lived in fear, wondering what physical harm would come to them next. They were unsure of their future, of the unknown.

The fear of the unknown is what is upon us today. What is COVID-19? Did that visitor from the mainland that I met yesterday have it? Is it spreading among our islands? What will we do if our store shelves are empty and we have nothing to eat? The unknown is taking over our minds and our lives, causing us stress and anxiety.

For both, the fear of the known and the unknown, Ke Akua has the answer. “Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely, I will help you. Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” As a loving parent calms you with an embrace, so does the presence of our makua o ka lani. In the anxious moments when fear creeps into your mind, ease back into Ke Akua’s loving arms and let him put you at ease. May that maluhia you feel, carry you through this time of the unknown.
