Kamehameha Schools has created a series of Hawaiian-focused devotionals for Advent, to honor the deep Christian faith of our founder Princess Pauahi. The devotionals were designed to be used by staffers, students and others to celebrate the coming of Christmas, so please feel free to share them.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! You must be thinking that I’m a bit crazy since we are still a month away from January 1. It’s actually the start of the Christian Year which begins on the last Sunday in November, kicking off the season of Ka Hikina or Advent. This takes us to Christmas when we mark the birth of Iesū Kristo. It ushers in a time of hope, peace, joy, and love.
The hope the Israelites had was that the coming Messiah would free them from the bondage of slavery they were facing. But Christ came not as a political savior but as our personal savior, to redeem us from sin to freedom of life in him and the joy of being his children. This hope is for all of us to claim.
May you take time this Advent season, to see the hope, the possibilities of what it means to truly live as free people, people who are not bound by the laws that keep us from being one with God. And may the “God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)

To me, Galatians 4:4-7 makes me feel loved and protected. Throughout the verse, it is said that we are children of God and because He has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, we can now acknowledge Him into our lives as our one and true Father. Since the age of four, I have been without a physical father, and although I miss him every day, I am so blessed to be able to have a relationship with my Heavenly Father. It makes me feel hopeful to know that no matter the circumstance, I can always lean on my Heavenly Father for protection, love, peace and so much more. I only wish that you may find hope in knowing that God is your father too!"
