Contributed by Dr. Tehani Corcoran

Mahalo nui for joining us on Zoom for our Parent Informational session regarding the return to school. A recording can be found below if you werenʻt able to make it, or would like to rewatch. The K-12 session that opened our meeting appears below that.

This is also where you can access our calendars, Parent and Student Handbook, and other useful resources.

Updates from the video have been bolded and highlighted below!

If you are only interested in the youtube playlist of orientation info, that can be found here: www.bit.ly/orientation6

  • Or you can always call our office at (808) 982-0400

ORIENTATION FOR PAPA 6 AND NEW INVITEES

  • Currently scheduled for the morning of Saturday, August 8. More info forthcoming!

MORNING DROP-OFF

  • Buses ONLY at bus ramp. ʻOhana drop-off is now at Laʻamea Gym.
  • If you are car-pooling, and would like to drop off students from multiple divisions in one place for temperature checking, please use our intercampus pass application, attached and linked here https://forms.gle/nmfh97XbnsvdyQye8.
  • We want to maintain a good flow of traffic. You do not need to wait after drop-off for temp to be taken. Should your child register a high temperature, we will wait 5-10 minutes and check again. If high temperature persists, we will then ask student (preferably to use their own cellphone) to call you back around to pick up.
  • The earliest drop-off time is dependent upon our morning bus schedule. Once we know what time the earliest bus arrives to campus, we will get adults scheduled for supervision and temperature checks for students who are dropped off by ʻohana.

MASKS / SHIELDS / GOGGLES

  • We have ordered six Landʻs End masks for each student. You may order additional from Landʻs End or other vendors of your choice. Non-“uniform” masks are allowed, as long as they are appropriate in print and messaging. We just confirmed that our order has arrived, so we will be mailing out masks to Face-to-Face students.
  • Goggles (like clear sunglasses) will also be provided and should be used upon kumu request, usually before turning to talk with neighbors in the classroom.
  • Students who wear prescription glasses will not need to wear goggles.
  • Shields will also be available if that is the studentʻs preference.
  • PPE does not need to be worn during PE, with proper social distancing.

LOCKER STUFFS

  • Have already been bagged and will be waiting for you in your new homeroom on the first day of school.

STUDENT SCHEDULES

  • Copies should be released on August 5 to those students who have cleared their obligations.
  • ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi is a required course.

DISTANCE LEARNING VS. FACE-TO-FACE

  • DL and F2F will be taught by separate teams of kumu.
  • Both F2F and DL students will be covering grade-level standards.
  • The largest cohort in F2F learning is 58.
    • Cohorts will not interact.
    • Cohorts are not based on geography / bus route.
    • Families / carpool buddies may request to be in the same cohort, but we may not be able to grant all requests, as cohorts are based upon math placement, elective choices, and other logistical factors.
  • F2F learners will definitely have daily outdoor time, including breaks and PE.
  • About 40 ʻohana have signed up for full DL.
  • ʻOhana will again select their preferred option in December for the remainder of the school year.
  • Laptops and technical support will be provided for ALL students.
    • Laptops will be rolled out to papa 6 and our new invitees to papas 7 & 8 either prior to or on the first day of school. More info is forthcoming.
  • F2F and DL students will not mix, although we hope to be able to celebrate together at online events like Chapel, Founderʻs Day, etc.
    • We advise at least ONE set of dress white uniforms for distance learners for these occasions.
  • You may switch your choice by giving our office a call or emailing me, but the last day that we will accept requests for changes is this Wednesday, July 22, as our partnership with ASU has been confirmed and registration paperwork needs to be completed IMMEDIATELY.

EATING

  • Our dining hall can accommodate two-full grade-levels safely, so each trimester, one grade-level will eat outside.
  • Home-lunches may be brought to campus, in consideration of various food allergies and the switch to all grab-and-go meals versus buffet-style service.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

  • Is in revision because “perfect attendance” is no longer the desired state when a student is feeling any symptoms that would warrant staying home.

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

  • Still unknown. Details from athletics and other clubs are still forthcoming and probably wonʻt be available until August or later.

We appreciate your communication and hope that this helps to ease your minds in regard to the many moving parts of life in the “new normal” as we return to school this Fall. We feel so truly blessed with the resources to be able to meet the regulations and requirements that will allow us to return to face-to-face learning in a way that many other institutions are not. Continuing to work for and pray for the safety of our Kula Waena ʻohana!

Mahalo,
