Kamehameha Schools is pleased to make tabulations of the Hawai‘i Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) results for Native Hawaiian students available for public use. The YRBS is a component of the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System which was developed in 1990 to monitor health risk behaviors that comprise the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults in the United States. The Survey is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Hawai‘i State Department of Health and is conducted at two-year intervals.

In Hawai‘i, survey coordination is provided by the Program Research and Evaluation - Office of the Curriculum Research & Development Group of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa under contract from the Hawai‘i State Departments of Education and Health. The special tabulations for native Hawaiian students were prepared by the Program Research and Evaluation Office with funding from Kamehameha Schools. A summary of the survey methods and highlights of the findings are provided in Hawaiian Students Compared with Non-Hawaiian Students on the 1997, 1999, and 2001 Hawai‘i Youth Risk Behavior Surveys.

Using the Tables

Results for 1997, 1999, and 2001 are presented in one set of tables to facilitate the identification of trends over time. Results for the 2003 administration were compiled separately and are presented in a second set of tables. Results are presented separately for middle and high school students.
