Shawn Malia Kana‘iaupuni, PhD, PASE Director

As a demographer and sociologist, Dr. Kana‘iaupuni’s (KS ’83) research at PASE focuses on the status and well-being of Hawaiians. Formerly Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Kana‘iaupuni also serves on the Race and Ethnic Advisory Committee to the U.S. Census Bureau and is adjunct clinical faculty of Public Health Sciences & Epidemiology at UH Mänoa.
   

Katherine A. Tibbetts, PhD, Research Scientist

Kathy has eighteen years of experience in evaluation at Kamehameha Schools. Her current role in PASE includes system assessment and evaluation of the K-12 programs, financial aid, and post-secondary retention and completion. Kathy previously served as one of six facilitators for the 2000-2015 KS Strategic Plan. She recently completed her PhD in Educational Psychology and is a long-term board member for Hawai‘i’s first public charter school.
   

Zijin Yang, PhD, Research Scientist

Zijin's responsibilities in PASE include the internal evaluation of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of KS program effects, in particular for research related to the impact of early childhood educational programs. In addition to his work at Kamehameha Schools, Zijin has worked as an evaluator for the University of Hawai‘i Center for Disability Studies and at Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL).
   

Nolan J. Malone, PhD, Research Scientist

Nolan’s research at PASE focuses on the well-being of Native Hawaiian learners, families and communities, as well as developing tools to better monitor and examine Hawaiian well-being over time. Nolan completed his PhD in Demography at the University of Pennsylvania and was formerly employed as a population analyst at the U.S. Census Bureau. Nolan specializes in survey research and quantitative analysis.
   

Alyson Silverstein, Research Scientist

Alyson’s primary duties in PASE include evaluation of K-12 programs, KS-funded charter schools, and long-term outcomes of KS graduates. Alyson previously worked for the Milton Hershey School for four years as a researcher and evaluator of K-12 educational and residential programs. Prior to that, she worked for three years in psychological services at Hershey.
   

Daniel Nahoopii, MBA, Ho‘oulu Hawaiian Data Center Manager

Under Daniel’s (KS ’84) leadership, the Ho‘oulu Hawaiian Data Center is building a comprehensive database of the Hawaiian population to support planning for lifelong learning. Daniel’s role includes systematizing the Hawaiian ancestry verification process for applicants who wish to be considered under the KS preference policy. Daniel's previous work experience includes eight years in market research.
   

Lilinoe Andrews, M.Ed., Pauahi Publications Manager and Editor

In leading Pauahi Publications, a new publishing venue for Kamehameha Schools, Lilinoe works in collaboration with KS departments and external Hawaiian organizations to develop and produce research, resources, and references for Hawaiian education. Lilinoe was formerly with ‘Aha Pünana Leo for eleven years where she served as Publications Director.
