CEO MESSAGE TO KS 'OHANA
August 27, 2003

Dear Kamehameha 'Ohana:

Mahalo kakou for the numerous calls, e-mail and letters encouraging us in the defense of Kamehameha’s policy of preference for Hawaiian children. We are very grateful for the outpouring of concern and commitment to help preserve Princess Pauahi’s legacy for Hawaiians.

Many of you have offered moral support and inquired about how you can help with this important struggle. There are several ways you can demonstrate your support – inform yourselves about the legal cases, attend informational meetings, write letters to the editor, sign petitions, visit our Admissions Lawsuit website at www.ksbe.edu, and much more. I’ve enclosed information you may find helpful and invite you to share this with your friends and family.

I also want to urge you to join us and numerous other organizations on Sunday, September 7th, at 8:00 a.m. for “Ku I Ka Pono,” a march through Waikiki to demonstrate Hawaiian unity and commitment to social justice for Hawaiians. We will gather at Kalakaua Ave. and Saratoga Rd. and march to Kapi'olani Park past several pieces of property bequeathed by Hawaiian ali'i to their people – Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, Sheraton Waikiki and Royal Hawaiian Hotels, International Market Place, Foster Towers and the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort. Our demonstration will culminate at OHA’s 'Ohana Day where we you can learn more about the legal and political challenges that face Hawaiians today.

The time is now to ensure that decision-makers in Hawai'i and across the country know how you feel about the many organizations and programs that work to improve the capability and well-being of the Hawaiian people. Their existence must be preserved and their work supported until Hawaiians are leading in scholastic achievement, until they are under-represented in prisons and homeless shelters, and their well-being restored.

I look forward to working together with you to protect and preserve the future for our keiki, our 'aina and our heritage.

I mua Kamehameha!

Colleen I. Wong
Acting Chief Executive Officer
