Legislative Updates

No hearing for HB1829

Aloha mai kākou! A week ago we sent out a message to alert the Kamehameha Schools ‘ohana about a legislative proposal that posed a potential threat to the property rights of our trust.

The good news, for now, is that House Bill 1829, House Draft 2 was not scheduled for a public hearing in the Senate prior to a key internal legislative deadline, so it appears to have been set aside for now. We will remain watchful, though, to make sure the concepts in this bill are not inserted into another measure late in the legislative session. While it would be premature to celebrate, we are cautiously optimistic.

Mahalo nui for your strong expressions of support and encouragement. It is truly comforting to know that so many are willing and prepared to step forward to protect and defend Kamehameha’s rights and mission.

This is not the first time a proposal like this has been made to take property rights away from Kamehameha Schools and other landowners, nor is it likely to be the last. We continue to monitor what happens at federal, state and county government, and as other important issues arise — particularly those that strike at the heart of Kamehameha’s ability to fulfill its mission — we will let you know as quickly as possible.

Thank you, again, for your support. I mua Kamehameha!
