A Community Effort

Before the Kamehameha Schools Learning Community can become reality, it is important to connect and capture the mana‘o of the residents and stakeholders of this community. Sessions are currently ongoing and upcoming.

Community Forums

Come and join your friends and neighbors for next steps in planning for Kamehameha Schools’ Ka Pua Initiative. A series of community forums will take place in March and we’re looking to hear from as many community members as possible. (RSVP here.)

Lend your voice and mana‘o to a community forum where we will share some food, talk story, and participate in activities to further confirm programs and needs to support a learning community on the Wai‘anae Coast.

What can we do to get kids to school, keep them in school and engage them in learning? Now is the time to clarify and design these education programs for our Wai‘anae Coast community. Everyone is invited to join us at any one of the following forums:
  • Thursday, March 15th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Nānākuli High & Intermediate School cafeteria (dinner provided)
  • Tuesday, March 20th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Community Learning Center at Nānākuli
  • Tuesday, March 20th from 2:45 to 5 p.m. at the Community Learning Center at Nānākuli
  • Wednesday, March 21st from 2:45 to 5 p.m. at the Wai‘anae District Park multipurpose room
  • Thursday, March 22nd from 5:45 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wai‘anae District Park multipurpose room
You can RSVP online or call 808-541-5333. RSVP not required, but encouraged for planning refreshments.

Check back for periodic updates on other ways to learn more about Ka Pua and its progress. Or sign up for the Ka Pua in Action newsletter to receive updates via email.

If you are interested in sharing your mana‘o, you can also connect with us at kapua@ksbe.edu.

Ka Pua In Action

Nānākuli High and Intermediate is the only public school from Hawai‘i chosen among 2,200 applicants nationwide to represent Hawai‘i and the United States at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. As part of Kamehameha Schools’ support on the Wai‘anae Coast, its funding support of $21,000 will allow additional students to travel and help defray costs. The Nānākuli Performing Arts Center welcomes any student in grades four through 12 who's interested. “We take anyone, even if they’re from other schools and any skill level,” said Robin Kitsu, Nānākuli High’s Performing arts director and Curriculum coordinator. The students will be performing Ma‘i Ho‘oka‘awale, the story of the lives of the residents of Kalaupapa in Edinburgh. Visit www.NHISPAC.com for more information.

Also, if you belong to a group or organization that would like to learn more about Ka Pua, send your contact information — and a suggested date or dates — to kapua@ksbe.edu and we will schedule a presentation with you.
