KSK Thanksgiving service features football theme

November 24, 2015

KS Kapālama High School celebrated the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday with La Pule Hoʻomana – A Thanksgiving Service – for the students and staff.

Campus Kahu Kordell Kekoa surprised the students by giving the service a football theme. The special speakers included Tua Tagovailoa – starting quarterback for KS’ rival school Saint Louis School, and Ed Kobel whose family owns the San Francisco 49ers.

The speakers shared how their Christian faith has carried them through difficult times and now taken them to a place of contentment and happiness.

Football helmets on the table were the first sign that this year’s Thanksgiving Service was going to be different.

Christian singers Barrett and Pinao Awai, Rodney and Hoku Arias, greeted the students with inspirational music.

KSK Kahu Kordell Kekoa explains the reason for the football helmets and introduces the first speaker, Tua Tagovailoa, starting quarterback for KS' rival football team, the Saint Louis Crusaders.

Tua talked about his Christian faith and how it has inspired him to pursue bible studies and to lead his team in prayer. Despite the competitive nature of football all opposing players can still be considered to be brothers under God.

Although surprised to be addressed by the leader of the Saint Louis Crusaders the students paid close attention to his message.

The second speaker was Ed Kobel, a member of the Debartolo family which owns the professional football team San Francisco 49ers. Despite a rough childhood, Kobel eventually developed a strong Christian faith and credits his happiness to his belief in God.

Students from the high school's Deputation Team tossed out souvenir miniature footballs as a gift from Kobel.

The Thanksgiving service closed with the joining of hands and a final prayer.
