2017 Founder’s Day Across the State

Kamehameha Schools staffers from Kaumakani to Keaʻau honored the memory and legacy of Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Bishop with song, praise and dance at Founder’s Day celebrations statewide. The events took place on and around December 19, Pauahi’s birthday. Mahalo to Design and Production Manager Reid Silva, KS Hawaiʻi Middle School technology kumu Kerry Kamisato, KS Maui Parent/Community Coordinator Lokelani Patrick, and Kauaʻi Regional Director Buffy Ofisa for sharing photos of this year’s celebrations.

WAI‘ANAE COAST REGION: KS Community Learning Center at Mā‘ili preschool teachers Cindi Pila, Janeen Ralar, Lisa Holt, Kim Inafuku, Wendy Egger and Ivy-Jean New-Christopher lead keiki in mele to honor Ke Ali‘i Pauahi.




KAUA‘I AND NI‘IHAU REGION: The KS Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau Region team and hundreds of community members honored Princess Pauahi at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Līhuʻe. The team includes Kealakulia Counselor Sharalyn Bucasas, Support Services Manager Caroline Victorino, Regional Director Buffy Ofisa, and and Administrative Coordinator Lei'ilima Rapozo.




KS trustees Micah Kāne, Elliot Mills, Robert Nobriga and Lance Wilhelm took part in the ceremony along with KS Kaua‘i/Ni‘ihau Regional Director Buffy Ofisa.




Keiki from St. Catherine’s School – a KS Kipona Scholarship Program collaborator – sang “Pauahi Nona Ka Lei” in honor of the princess.




In honor of the princess, members of the Kamehameha Schools Association Kaua‘i presented the Pauahi Foundation with a check for $38,000. The funds will be used to establish a KSAK Senior Scholarship for high school seniors as they move on to attend college.




KAWAIAHA‘O PLAZA: KP staffers celebrated Pauahi’s life at nearby Kawaiaha‘o church, where the princess and other ali‘i once worshipped.




Kawaiaha‘o Plaza group representatives line up outside the chapel with nā ho‘okupu (ceremonial gifts) they will present, in honor of Princess Pauahi.




KS Director of Education Assessment Shawna Medeiros shared her ho‘omana‘o (reflections) on the many ways Pauahi’s legacy has impacted her journey as a Native Hawaiian woman, mother and educator.




Employees sing “Pauahi o Kalani,” by Queen Lili‘uokalanai as a hīmeni ho‘okupu (song of tribute) to Ke Ali‘i Pauahi.




KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS KAPĀLAMA: Pū kani announce the beginning of KS Kapālama’s 130th annual Founder’s Day Celebration.




Kekūhaupi’o Gym was filled with students, faculty, staff and dignitaries to honor Pauahi.

KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS MAUI: Students, staff, faculty, alumni and honored guests of KS Maui gathered in Ka‘ulaheanuiokamoku Gym to honor Ke Ali‘i Pauahi through mele, pule, hula, mo‘olelo, and ho‘okupu. The program began with the procession of Ke Aliʻi Pauahi. Senior Keʻalahoʻoipoleimaile Cabanilla performs the chant as classmates Kamahaʻo Ota and Iokepa Supnet carry Pauahi’s kiʻi (picture).

KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS HAWAI‘I: More than 1,300 KS Hawaiʻi faculty, staff members and students raised their voices in song and praise at their annual Founder’s Day celebration at Koaiʻa Gymnasium.

EAST HAWAI‘I – East Hawai‘i alumni gathered at the William Charles Lunalilo Center at KS Hawai‘i to celebrate Founder’s Day. KSH regional leaders were in attendance, as were East Hawai‘i’s Hawaiian civic clubs including the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu, and Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i.




WEST HAWAI‘I – The West Hawai‘i Founder’s Day event was held in the Heritage Museum Center at the Keauhou Shopping Center. KS Community Engagement and Resources staff from the region hosted the event attended by area keiki, kumu and families.
