KS Kapālama Musical – “In the Heights”

April 7, 2015

The KS Kapālama High School Performing Arts Department and the drama club – Keaka Kamehameha – recently brought the Tony Award-winning hit musical “In The Heights” to the campus’ Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani Auditorium. The show thrilled audiences with its compelling story, show-stopping singing and dynamic dancing.

In his director’s notes in the play’s printed program, drama teacher Patrick Fujiloka writes, “The thing that immediately struck me was how similar the story and lives of the characters are to what we experience here in Hawaiʻi today. People are searching for a place to call home and are trying to answer the question ‘Where do I fit in?’”

KS photographer Michael Young was on hand to capture the highlights of the dynamic musical.

Washington Heights is a tightly knit vibrant Latino neighborhood in New York City. On a hot July 4 weekend, lives are changed when dreams and hopes collide with the demands of the real world.

Usnavi, played by Mason Mendoza, grew up in the neighborhood and owns a small grocery store but dreams of moving to the Dominican Republic, his family’s homeland.

Vanessa, played by Casey Park, is Usnavi’s love interest but she also draws the attention of all the men in the neighborhood.

Usnavi’s friends Benny, played by Alika Tolzmann, and Nina, played by Kuʻulei Kekoa, like each other very much but she wants to go away to college and he doesn’t know what he wants.

Although dramatic events are changing the neighborhood, the residents get together to celebrate friendships one last time.

Usnavi has inherited a fortune and now has the ability to pursue his dream of moving to the Dominican Republic but will his dream bring him more happiness than his friendships in Washington Heights?

The Piragua Guy, played by ʻAukai Kekoa, sweetens up the neighborhood with his songs and flavored ices.

The cast receives a standing ovation from the audience at the end of its final performance.
