New Applicant Services Center is more accessible to learners

The Kamehameha Schools Applicant Services Center ‘ohana recently celebrated the blessing of its new, more accessible office space on the first floor of the Kawaiahaʻo Plaza Hale Mauka building.

Each year, more than 4,000 KS program applicants pass through the doors of the center. Its friendly staff members provide one-on-one assistance to families applying to the Ho‘oulu Hawaiian Data Center as well as KS Financial Aid and Scholarship, campus and community programs.

“Being one of the most prevalent front-facing units at Kawaiaha‘o Plaza with visitors year-round on a daily basis, it made sense to move the service center to the courtyard where our applicant families could access us as soon as they exit the KP Makai elevators or enter our courtyard from South Street,” says Michelle Sasaoka, ASC/Data Center director. “We are grateful for the support from the KS Facilities team in helping to make this happen.”

The center’s new location means that applicants will not have to walk through the KP Hale Mauka reception area where the building’s employee I.D. and visitor badge policy is enforced.

“We are happy to have a space easily accessible to the public,” says Trisha Plemer, ASC manager.  “The space allows us to continue to provide personalized service to our families. We are returning to a courtyard-facing service area like we had when we first started intake of documents for the Data Center in 2004.”

The new ASC space is both functional and inviting.  Immediately upon walking through the glass door visitors are welcomed by an Applicant Services assistant ready to attend to their needs.

To the right is a bank of chairs for accompanying family members or others awaiting their turn.  For the little ones who often tag along, the space includes a keiki corner filled with toys, books and a television to watch their favorite cartoons.

In addition to providing applicant services, the office is also a place for job-seekers to search for and apply for KS jobs. A kiosk of four computers is dedicated to those filling out KS financial aid, scholarship, program and job applications.

Share the news about the new ASC with your family and friends! Direct them to the entrance of the new center located at Kawaiaha‘o Plaza, to the right of the main lobby sliding doors.
