a strong financial foundation
In 1884, as part of her last will
and testament, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop placed
$474,000 worth of inherited Kamehameha lands in a perpetual
endowment for the founding and support of Kamehameha
Schools. At the time, virtually all of Pauahi’s
assets were in real estate. Today, 33 percent of KS’
assets are in real estate and 67 percent are in financial
assets. At the end of fiscal year 2003, the combined
assets had a market value of more than $5.5 billion.
