Will of Bernice Pauahi Bishop

Kamehameha Schools Campus Programs

With extraordinary foresight, Bernice Pauahi Bishop, last direct descendant of Ali`i nui Kamehameha I and sole heir to the vast Kamehameha Lands, created the schools as the sole beneficiary of her expansive estate. This will allow selected Hawaiian students to regain control over their social, political and cultural destinies for generations to come. Deeply concerned by the decline of the Hawaiian people following Western contact, she believed that a sound, formal education was the key to survival. In her Will, Ke Ali`i Pauahi established the Kamehameha Lands as a trust in perpetuity, dedicated to a single purpose: The founding and continued support of the Kamehameha Schools, the sole beneficiary, located at Kapälama, O`ahu.

Special Programs and Scholarships

In 1962, KS trustees sought and received permission from the courts to offer educational programs away from the Kapälama campus. That enabled Kamehameha Schools to begin developing ways to reach more Hawaiian students, and during the summer of 1963, Kamehameha's first summer program enrolled 388 students at seven locations throughout the state and KS was able to serve thousands of people per year through 1993 with programs from pre-natal care to adult education. Some of these outreach programs were funded by the federal government. In 1995, many of KS's community programs were terminated to make way for more full-time programs.
