A Brief History of Kamehameha Schools

Kamehameha Schools was founded by the will of Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the great-granddaughter and last direct royal descendant of Kamehameha the Great.

In 1887, three years after her death, the Kamehameha School for Boys opened with 37 students and four teachers. In 1894 the Kamehameha School for Girls opened.

From these modest beginnings Kamehameha Schools has grown to become a symbol of educational excellence for Hawaiians. Today, Kamehameha is a school-system with three campuses on O`ahu, Maui and Hawai`i serving more than 5,100 students in kindergarten through grade 12.

In addition, Kamehameha operates 29 preschools, statewide, which serve more than 1,400 students.

Our Mission and Vision

Kamehameha Schools' mission is to fulfill Pauahi's desire to create educational opportunities in perpetuity to improve the capability and well-being of people of Hawaiian ancestry.

Kamehameha Schools is a dynamic and nurturing learning community committed to educational excellence.  We assist people of Hawaiian ancestry to achieve their highest potential as "good and industrious men and women."  We do so by contributing to their development as people who are:

Religious Affiliation: Kamehameha is a Christian, non-denominational Protestant school. Students are required to attend worship services, attend religious education classes and participate in special events, such as Founder's Day and Song Contest.

Statement of Purpose (Grades K-12)

Kamehameha Schools admits children who show potential and who are able, in a timely and satisfactory manner, to meet all academic, physical and religious activities requirements which together comprise the fundamental nature of a Kamehameha education. Kamehameha admits children on the premise that they have the intent and ability to graduate from Kamehameha.

Kamehameha's policy on admissions is to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.

Admission Entrance Points (K-12 Program)

At the Kapalama Campus our major entrance points are kindergarten and grades 4, 7 and 9. Limited vacancies are available for grades 10, 11 and 12.

At the Hawai`i and Maui Campuses, our major entrance points are kindergarten and grades 6 and 9.  Limited vacancies are available for grades 10, 11 and 12.

Application Timetable

Admission Preference to Orphans and Indigents

At our major entry points a portion of new spaces are reserved for applicants identified as either orphaned or indigent.  These children do receive some special consideration for admission, as directed by the Will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop.  However, this does not mean that all orphaned or indigent children will automatically gain admission to Kamehameha Schools.

For the purposes of admission to Kamehameha Schools, "orphan" is defined as a child who has lost one or both biological (natural) parents through death.  Children in single-parent households do not qualify as "orphans" unless the absentee parent is deceased.  To verify orphan status, the deceased parent's death certificate must be submitted to the Admissions Office.

"Indigent" is defined as a child whose immediate family's (parents/legal guardians) total household income is at (or below) 185% above the federal poverty level with cost of living adjustment for Hawai`i. To be considered in the indigent category, parents must either submit a copy of their 2005 federal tax returns including W-2 forms or, if the family receives DHS assistance, parents may submit a copy of their letter from DHS showing proof of current coverage for welfare/TANF. Foster children are "wards of the state" and, as such, are considered indigent with verification of their status from DHS.

District Quotas (K-12 Admissions Only)

Students only compete for admission to Kamehameha Schools with children who live in the same geographic districts.

The numbers are obtained from the Department of Education which provides an annual report of the ethnic breakdown of students in every DOE school, statewide, in grades K-12.

Kamehameha uses these figures to determine district quotas. These figures are reviewed annually, and updated as needed, to ensure that even those living in rural and/or neighbor island communities have access to our application and admission process.

Orphan/Indigent quotas represent 15-25% of total available spaces for each primary entry point.

Boarding

Kamehameha's Kapalama Campus on O`ahu has a Boarding Community of 555 students in grades 7-12. All boarding spaces are reserved for Neighbor Island students from islands/communities not presently served by Kamehameha's neighbor island campuses.  Currently, there is no boarding program at either the Hawai`i or Maui Campuses.

Information for Out-of-State Applicants

Kamehameha's policy on admissions is to give preference to children of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.

Out-of-state applicants may only apply for grades 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 or 12.  Our major entrance grades are 6, 7 and 9. Limited vacancies are available for grades 10, 11 and 12.

Kamehameha's K-12 program targets students whose parents or legal guardians are residents of the State of Hawai`i, however, out-of-state students may apply.

Boarding is not guaranteed to out-of-state applicants. We have limited boarding facilities and give priority to neighbor island students.

Testing is in October and November. Applicants to grades 6, 7 and 9 must be tested. Applicants to grades 10, 11 and 12 are not tested. If an applicant is unable to attend one of Kamehameha's scheduled tests, admission testing may be administered out-of-state by a teacher, counselor or administrator at the applicant's current school. To meet our deadline, all testing must be completed by November 15, 2006.

Interviews must be done in person by one of our staff. Telephone interviews are not acceptable. Kamehameha is not responsible for the travel expenses of applicants. Only applicants to grades 6, 7 and 9 are interviewed. Out-of-state applicants can arrange to be interviewed during the summer of the year prior to the year they are seeking admission. For example, a student who wishes to apply for the 2007-2008 school year can be interviewed during summer 2006. However, all interviews must be completed by December 31, 2006.

Policy to Give Preference to Hawaiian Applicants

Kamehameha Schools' admissions policy is to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law. If you would like to be considered under that policy, your Hawaiian ancestry must be verified by Kamehameha's Ho`oulu Hawaiian Data Center (HHDC). After your completed application is received in the Admissions Office, a Hawaiian Ancestry Registry (HAR) packet will be sent to applicants who have never registered to be completed and returned to the Data Center. Please do not submit any original birth certificates with your child's application for admission.

If you would like to obtain a HAR form immediately, you may call the Data Center at 808-523-6228, or toll-free at 1-800-842-4682, then press 9, then 36228. You may also check: www.ksbe.edu/datacenter for answers to frequently asked questions.

Residence, Name and Guardianship Verification

Residency in the State of Hawai`i for the child and his/her parents or legal guardians is a requirement for enrollment at Kamehameha although mainland applicants may also be considered. In addition, Kamehameha observes District Quotas to ensure equitable geographic distribution of spaces. Therefore, upon acceptance, parents must verify the home address listed on their child's application (e.g., through utility bills).  In addition, if there have been changes affecting a child's legal name, any custody agreements or legal guardianship of your child, you will be asked to submit all necessary court documents prior to your child's enrollment at Kamehameha Schools.
