HCIE is a community-based, participatory research
study aimed at understanding the impact of culture-based
educational strategies on middle and high school
students. It was hypothesized that culturally
relevant teaching and learning strategies have
a positive impact on students’ socio-emotional
development and their educational outcomes.
Central research questions:
1. What kinds of teaching strategies are being
used in Hawai`i classrooms?
2. How do CBE strategies affect the way students
feel about themselves and the quality of their
family and community connections?
3. To what extent do CBE strategies contribute
to positive education outcomes (e.g., school engagement,
academic performance) of students?
Survey Instruments:
The study involved matched surveys of teachers,
students and parents in different learning environments
across the state. Unique instruments were designed
with community feedback to capture relevant data.
